I bought a 2nd hand Cambridge Audio CD player recently. I just noticed that when I put a non original cd, ie burned copy or a download burned onto a cdr,into the tray, it won't play it. The machine tries to read it but eventually the display says "no play" not "no disc". It suggests to me that it recognises that it is a cdr but won't play it. Is this a feature of Cambridge Audio players or is this unusual?? I've never experienced it before with a CD player. Any thoughts?? Thanks.

Hi Critical Mass, I have a 640c V2 and never have any issues with burned cds. Is it happening with all non-original cds? Maybe a dodgy cd?

I've come across this with some of the cheaper brand of CDR's.
Mind you it's been several years since it happened.

It did happen a few months back when I found a few old recorded CD's, my player just wouldn't read them.
I realised later that at least one was an MP3 so it wasn't going to work anyway.

I've found older, and frankly cheaper, players sometimes struggle with CDRs.
Derek recently gave me some (ahem) backup CDRS of music we'd been listening to and 2 or the 3 disks won't play on the shop CDP (an old but good Technics) so there's a certain unpredictability around the issue. I had an old Arcam transport - great machine but it would reject most CDRs. Sometimes opening and then closing the the drive can work... which just supports my "unpredictability" theory.

I had problems with bootleg live cdr's that I burnt copies of to ensure I would never lose a working copy.
Understand now the price difference for cdr's related to quality also. I gravitated to the 50 for a tenner spindle but they seem to disintegrate over time. Wonder would the game store machines that remove scratches etc from games be worth checking out for a beloved cd that is not replaceable?

BTW I had problems with some cdr's on my cyrus player, some but not all but put it down to the above.

Hi tweber. I tried 4 or 5 cdr's and none of them would play. Thanks all, I might try a better quality cdr.

So I tried it again this morning and it played the burnt discs. What do ya know?
