BBC 4 16th August @ 7.30pm JEG Bach Ortarios

Post by Seán »

ALERT it's on tonight and it's Ms Klein rather than that other yoke:
7.30pm DURATION: 1 HOUR, 25 MINUTES
Sir John Eliot Gardiner, one of the pre-eminent exponents of the music of JS Bach, returns to the Proms with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists in two profoundly moving works based on events in the life of Christ, the Easter Oratorio and the Ascension Oratorio. Introduced by Suzy Klein.

thank Sean,

well, by the time JEG's Christmas Cantatas BWV.63, 64, 121 & 133 finish, it will be time to slide over to Easter, and the lovely Ms Klein.

Ah I am glad that you like Ms Klein. That other one, Derham, is a dope.

Ah, you like Ms Klein then? That other one, Derham, is a dope.
it has LONG been a major bone of contention with me and Darren, that SK who has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of all things classical, gets sidelined in favour of of Ms Derham who might have the acceptable BBC face, but simply isn't classically trained and it shows too often in the shallow level of her questioning...

...the irony being that Ms SK is actually also physically much more my type than Katie Derham... who simply isn't.

I doubt very much if it comes down to looks I expect that the Beeb do not want to have it that (we)the peasants are intimated by someone like Ms Klein, who has a passion for music and knows what she is talking about, and would rather have the peasants listen to, what was once a pretty woman, who does not have any interest in or knowledge of what she is talking about and therefore, indulges in inane chatter. It's called dumbing down we have it here too, believe me.

Well, what a treat for the evening... beautiful performances!

thanks for posting it Sean... I was aware that there was a Proms concert on tonight, but I hadn't looked it up at that stage.

re the above, I'm afraid this is all part of a larger bone of contention with me... the BBC and Independent channels alike in the UK seem to go for stereotypical female presenters, the criteria for which Derham fits but Klein doesn't. I sometimes think the former could present programmes about antiques/ gardens/ house restorations etc just as much as music, whereas Klein is a specialist, with interesting things to say, and as such they only tend to wheel her out on BBC 4 for the occasional late night Schoenberg concert, and she never gets a look in for the prime time BBC2 Beethoven slot. This is a shame, because she's a quality broadcaster.

Oooops, you are right Don, I created the thread in a hurry because I wanted to make members (particularly Fergus, Jared, Simon, Ciaran, et al) aware of the broadcast and I had less than an hour to do so.
