Okay, I swapped the valves around and the red plating follows the valve, not the socket. Is that compelling enough for me to be sure that it's the valve itself that's at fault? Seems like it is, but best to be sure!

I'm not out of the woods yet, though. I have a few spare output valves, so I stuck one of the old ones in and there's still the same fizzing and popping through the speaker, so I'm convinced something's not right. Surgery required, I think.
