Mains Cleaning discussion

Post by markof »

A while ago, there was a great discussion here on mains power, noise, power cleaning and the effect on SQ.

Were there any conclusions reached and recommendations?

I have recently added a Tacima power bar to my setup and I can hear that it has made a positive difference but I'm not sure why.

I'd say that's the discussion in my "am I crazy" thread. The general view seemed to be that clean mains is important, using passive purifiers can lead to mixed results that are very system dependent, and that active regeneration is a good idea. Certainly when I borrowed Sligolad's AG1500 I had very good results, and I'm still intending to purchase one.

Would love more discussion!

I have also few Tacima bars in my system, they're not too bad at all and good build quality but the best result was were I changed my mains cable for a Wireworld Stratus 5 cable.

I can't really explain why, but according to my ears it works ! :D

I have a few tacima bars in my systems as well. When I bought the first one I sincerely felt it improved things. I have bought a few of them as they are reasonably priced. At this stage couldnt tell you whether they add anything or not. I got the 500w regenerator (powerinspired) that Simon is talking about. Thats all I needed due to the watts of my amp. I cant say if it brings anything to the party as I just plugged it in and use it all the time. The big thing it would bring you Mark is protection from the power spike issue you suffered awhile ago. It is also on special or was anyway recently. It is more affordable than the 1500w one

Thanks for the replies. The regenerator looks like the bees knees.

Any idea what is going on in the mains? Does mains noise have a measurable effect on the noise floor of the system and if so, which components (source, amp, ear, brain etc.) are most effected by it?
I bought the Tacima bar hoping that it would afford some degree of protection to my amp if we get another spike like the last one and the improvement in SQ came as a surprise.

Also, I found that I prefer the sound when the computer is connected to a separate socket, not plugged into the bar along with the amp.
I have my amp, cd player and the EM-ESL's plugged into the bar and the definition and separation have improved which I guess is an aspect of reduced noise.

Also, I came across this : Tripp Lite IS1000 Isolation Transformer 125-130

Any experiences with this category of device?

Well, after several months of dithering, I've finally ordered one of these:

Yahoo you went for the 'big' one in the end. That should make the wadia sound bearable in your system on monday tuesday actually every day of the week.

It better!

I decided to go for the big one for the sake of flexibility. I can use my amps with this one if I choose to.

Dont worry it will. It would seem fairly obvious you have some power issue or ground loop that John can explain better than me. The wadia as we all now know doesnt have a problem with sound reproduction.

The very best of luck with it! Though I'm slightly worried about the noise from the twin fans especially as you're supposed to have super 'watch tick' hearing :) Anyway do let us know how you get on. Nirvana beckons :)
