XP on a usb stick

Post by tony »

Since 8 is available on usb is there any possibility of running xp on a usb to allow one boot up a windows 8 laptop using xp.
Strange request but I need it to use car diagnostics software that requires xp. I dont want to install xp on my dodgy laptops that cant ultrastream jplay!

Just wondering is it possible and should it just work ok.The only use is for the diagnostics nothing else.

use vmware virtual imaging to install xp on win 8 is the simplest solution tony
youll need a copy of win xp though

Thanks Nige will check it out. I have a copy or possibly copies of xp. A guy in work was demonstrating the new odb2 stuff which seems to work for most cars from 2005. My newest car just missed out. You can download the app to your phone and bluetooth connect to a €10-50 euro diagnostic connector which plugs into the engine management connector. Amazing the leaps. Back street garage can now do most engine diagnostics for little expenditure

Either do I but it would be a piece of cake for you. Basically it allows you to read the fault codes. e.g abs light is on on my xantia. More than likely it is a wheel sensor but which one? This hopefully will tell me. You can get manifold exhaust temperatures ad finitum depending on functionality and ability to interpret the product(and also depending on its functionality) For me I just want to read fault codes for the moment.

You can run xp with vmware or VirtualBox [which I have tried] but you have to do a full installation.

I think you can run xp stuff on win 8 in compatilility mode .. you right click and then one of the options is 'run in compatibility mode' [at least on a friends win 8 which is win 8 pro]

The normally available OBD readers lock you out of a lot of stuff though - I've done some work on these!! Also, they don't give you the full info. They are handy though for reading the fault codes and maybe allowing you to figure out what to ignore!

There's a reason the full diagnostic systems are ~€4k!

I think the new Passat and maybe golf you need the full system to do things like brake pads - you have to open the callipers in the software and then close them again after doing the pads.

good man james forgot about that think it has to be pro version of win 8 or higher, but it does not always work, but its first thing to try

Its at least worth trying ..
Quicker than installing vmware and then installing xp

Thanks James it is not pro just a basic 7 upgrade but I will try it also. Noted Fran I just want to read fault codes but it is a bit of a joke all this stuff about changing brake pads and needing €4k worth of software to tell the cars management system that a new pair of brake pads are fitted.
On my C5 the software threw up a message change FAP filter. Now I wont even mention the price. My trusted mechanic gleefully told me fap needs to be done.I advised tell the machine it has been changed and hey presto all is well again.4yrs later the car is driving around fine and passes NCT emissions tests easily with its rotten old fap filter.
