if you buy the pico psu with this case the power brick is included you need nothing else
if you are going with a motherboard and processor with internal graphics support (all the ones weve mentioned before have) and your not using the sotm usb pci card you dont need a riser.

i know your not too exited about the windows to go usb sticks, but they seem to work at least as good (if not better) as a ssd from a sound point of view and there reasonably cheap and you wont need the ssd and the sata filter (possibly)

so all youd need is motherboard; fanless case; processor; picu psu & power brick; 8gb ram or more and a windows to go usb key

we will know a lot more when john finishes his testing,

Thanks Nige, Have no issue with trying the usb stick sounds well worthwhile and saves cira €200 on the cost. If it is not successful the ssd etc can be added afterwards. If my figures re correct the price would come in at €800ish using the usb stick. It is coming in a little closer to Johns nuc solution

BTW, I think you will discover your inner female when you get hands on with the NUC - it's real cute. It is the antithesis of the big iron finned, heavily engineered Streacom or HDplex cases. Probably low on the FAF (friends acceptance factor) scale though?
Has much more WAF but who cares about that, we can have chunks of iron in the living room, if we like, right - hell I park my Harley behind the sofa when the mood takes me.

The jkdac32 or ciunas can play the female part, the h5 can be the man
Of course the dac will be hiding behind the H5 case

Well, I'm not so sure - I don't like my devices taking the female role - I believe in equality :)
I have plans anyway for a NUC style DAC box - called the Ciúnas NUA (New Unit of Audio) - see what I did there -NUA, new :)

Excellent but it will be interesting to compare the H5 with usb3 sticking out proudly at the front will look with the female cuinas cowering in the rear.

agreed time to get back focused on the audio build. Can you post a link to your nuc and the enclosure you are considering for it and the ciunas? If it sounds good and no reason it shouldn't at least be as good as a similar laptop the one box unit will be very attractive for punters

BTW if it is a usb3 stick 32gb £11-12 on amazon.

I'm still in R&D stage but as much as I want to reveal, at the moment, is on Fran's spreadsheet

you must still have the i7 in your price calculations and theres no point comparing the price of an i7 with an i3
if you look at frans chart
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... sp=sharing

you will see the 62 euro gigabyte mb, the 70 euro g860 cpu, the 120 euro picu psu, 50 euro for 8gb ram, 40 for a usb stick and 200 for the hi- plex h 5 case.
all for less than 550 euro and many reusable parts
