One thing that cropped up during our conversation was Jplay. I reckon that Jplay sounds better than any Mac playback software I have heard (especially the current beta, soon to be released Jplay version). I've heard Fidelia, Audirvana+ & Amarra.
Now Claus is mostly a Mac user using Audirvana+ & doesn't have a suitable PC for trying Jplay.

Something occurred to me that other Mac users may be able to answer? If using a Win8 to go USB stick, can an Intel-based Mac be booted into Win8 using this stick? On a PC the bios has to be changed to make USB the first device to use at boot time (or this is chosen during boot-up sequence) - can this be done on a Mac also?
If so, how?
so there is other things going on beside jplay testing

windows to go for mac other than the retina macbook is possible ill double check it now

Thanks Nige! Muy Apreciado.
It would open the way for those poor Mac users to hear what they're missing :)

this would be slightly easier with win 7 because apples bootcamp doesnt support win 8, which is a shame because bootcamp is simple,
but here's the work around:

i only figured this because of our work on the jd audiophile usb stick thing
basically we will have to make one of these usb sticks as we did before.
this might be a bit of a mission for people that only have used mac,
because without access to a windows pc it would involve virtual image software such as vmware to install a windows 7/8 image on the mac to then build the usb win 8 stick

it would probably be easier if we build these windows to go sticks for these guys and post them on.
i think this will only work with the windows 7 bcdboot (bcdboot F:\windows /s F: ) as win 8 uefi is not supported as far as i know

once the windows to go stick is build and working
insert it into the mac usb port
with the mac fully shut down turn it on while holding the option/alt key
it will present you with your connected volumes
your arrow keys will work
you will have macintosh hd windows and uefi
choose windows and hit enter (if you choose uefi it will crash, wont do any harm though)
it will boot win 8
google bootcamp drivers to get anything working that isn't already, full trackpad functonality is the big one

my usb3 stick works a treat, as well as a partition on my macbook with win 8 installed

Fantastic. Thanks for putting in the work.
I'll try to get a 32GB USB stick setup & ready to post to Claus first & after that those that might be interested in comparing Win*/Jplay Vs Mac/playback software of choice.

hi mark

if you had a win 8 install disc/usb key you could also install on a partition on your macminis hard drive if you so wished.
just a matter of creating a partition with disc utility formated fat 32
boot the installer using the option/alt key
format your new partition ntfs
install win 8
on reboot hold option key select windows partition
finish install
reboot
use option key on start up to choose win 8

windows to go would definitely be better for those uncomfortable with messing around with there install, regardless its always best to clone the mac os with superduper or the like.
