The Blomstedt/SFO is a great set of recordings including a most fine Mathis der Mahler This CPO disc makes a good companion since as I mentioned, these works are not as frequently recorded.Seán wrote:I haven't listened to Hindemith in a long time, I must blow the diust off my EMI CDs. I only have the one 3 CD set with Blomstedt conducting the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in his orchestral worksDonKC wrote:Some lesser performed and recorded Hindemith
Concerto for Orchestra 1925 his first major orchestral work
Sinfonietta in E 1949 a Louisville Symphony commission
Pittsburgh Symphony 1958 a commission from the city of Pittsburgh and his last titled symphony
Melbourne SO Werner Andreas Albert

Re: What are you listening to?
Just to add to the current Dvorak conversation I listened to this one very recently....
It is not a very common work but I really like its somewhat wistful and quirky slow movement.

Those performances are on CD too, Hindemith was not a bad conductor.fergus wrote:DonKC wrote:Some lesser performed and recorded Hindemith

Giving the Blomstedt/San Francisco discs that Seán mentioned a whirl.
Re: What are you listening to?
I have always been surprised by how infrequently performed and recorded, his PC appears to be. Of course I'm no expert, but I have always found this disk to be rather pleasureable:fergus wrote:Just to add to the current Dvorak conversation I listened to this one very recently....

A brace of Vaughan Williams....
It is interesting to hear the strong influence of Holst (Neptune) in the Sinfonia Antartica as it is something that we discussed recently in the "Planets" thread.
