Supertweeters

Post by tony »

Well I like some gadgets and since the 57's I bought had townshend supertweeter brackets and the previous owner waxed lyrical about a JAS pair he had used I kept an eye out for them. Borrowed pair from Pearse that ahem had only one working (since repaired by Pearse and when people hear what was used one will be amazed at the price asked for these) Tried a townshend pair belonging to Peter when he dropped over and definitely could hear that they added something.

Anyway I found a secondhand pair of audiosmiles on wigwam which strangely hadn't sold. They were tuned for tannoys of some sort. The seller advised I would have to get them retuned for 57's. Maybe that put people off. Well I dived in and got them sent back to Simon in Audiosmile. Looks like a one man show but not sure. They arrived this morning in great condition. A lot bigger than the townshends and to my ears they are really adding to the higher end. Much more so than the townshends. Not sure if this is just how they are tuned or if it is wishful thinking on my part. These are different to townshends in that you only have 2 settings compared to townshends 0-6 dial. Of course they are limiting if you want to change speaker as they need to be sent back to be 'tuned' for a different type of speaker. Unless the 57's blow up that wont be happening.

Really very pleased with these supertweeters they really seem to be working wonders with cymbals and really add an extra dimension to the overall sound of my speakers. I don't believe there are many people interested in these things but just in case I noticed Audiosmile are offering a 30% discount on their(his) prices for xmas and the new year. link below gives the details which seems to work by emailing audiosmile directly. There is a bit of a nasty sting in the tail when buying online as vat is added to the price and postage so be aware of that as I am sure that vat needs to be added to the offer price.

If funds were available it's the sort of thing I might go for (at the reduced price) but at the moment I'll just have to clean my ears to get any kind of upgrade.

A bottle or two or three of your own best Red should make a few differences!!

A few bottles might make him buy!. You can pop around for a listen or try them on your own. Now the audiosmile thing is that they are 'tuned' for each speaker type so be gods they are bespoke but sure if they sounded good untuned at least you know what you could get. I cant do the mad long descriptive attributes but I was astounded with what they have done. That said somebody else could listen and think my god what has he done they are terrible.

Wouldn't mind trying them with the stacked quads sometime Tony - that was the original Mark Levinson way. He used a ribbon tweeter though.

Of course Fran, If you think you might be tempted by them pm me and we can try and arrange something before the offer runs out otherwise we can sort something out early in the new year. BTW got a second pv1 sub (Pearse's caste off) so tweeted and woofered out now.
