I think this is an accomplished set of performances, but some way short of the best... Du Pre is too aggressive and 'angular' for my tastes and the recording quality isn't the finest... my choice here would be:

which is exceptionally fine, throughout.

Well, I do like Barenboim's Beethoven piano sonatas, and who doesnt like du pre...???

Didn't realise the sonatas and variations was a live recording.... will have to hear it on the main rig before judging the rq....

That is a GREAT set, enjoy; it is second only to the earlier Cluyten/BPO cycle (to my ear).

I've been sniffing around Beethoven sets again today, actually. I heard a piece that I know well on the radio the other day and I realised I didn't actually know who or what it was. Alegretto from Beethoven 7 apparently, and I'm so appalled by not knowing this I'm going to have to buy a box. Cluytens is front-runner so far.

I would say you have some very fine music there my friend... the 1960's LvB is Karajan's strongest cycle, and should bring you much joy.

not bought anything in a good long while, so I'll give this a go. I also have a version by Katarina Karneus, so I'm hoping to become more acquainted in due course.
