Ok time to make my own rack. Needs to be 600/612 wide x 500mm depth to ensure the amp will fit.
Will only need 3 shelf's initially but if I build it like the hifiracks adding shelf's isn't an issue.
Checked out a few racks online and the flesh. My favourite is the podium sold by cloneys. http://www.hifiracks.co.uk
I can use ikea worktop for the shelves. See link http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/80123672/ this is the oak version. I have the short length already which was used previously for its intended purpose. I can get two shelves from that but have to decide on whether to use a piece of granite (hopefully offcut from kitchen supplier) or else buy more worktop from Ikea. Woodworkers and hobbies in terenure sell nice worktop also (oak and walnut(very expensive)). The idea is to spend as little as possible.
Happy enough I will get the oak legs from a joiner. 46x46 or maybe 50x50. Anybody aware of a better option?
Can somebody have a look at their podium and maybe give me a photo. I am assuming it is just a thread insert in the shelf and the shelf and a threaded bar? I could use a nut and just glue it in place. Is tucks fasteners if they still exist the best place for this type of stuff? Is there a better arrangement.
I will put spikes and rout out a circular hollow (4) in each shelf for the spike shoes ala the podium.
Projected cost if I had to buy a length of worktop €220 + €50 spikes + Unknown for oak legs + €10 threaded bar/inserts. Ok obviously when I buy 30 sort kones that will add some extra cost but I don't want baaaad sound.
The whole idea is to bring it in at a reasonable price as there is little point spending more than I could get one from cloneys.
If anyone has some ideas happy to listen.

No not quiet but one needs a little diversion every now and then. Sure it will only take 4 weeks to make this (one shelf)

I'll measure me legs later but just bear in mind.... with a valve amp leave one shelf extra deep so the heat can get out and run about. If you're putting the amp on the top no problem but it's usually handier to keep the top one free or a source.
Vinyl -anything else is data storage.

Hi Ivor No need on that I think you are a short leg myself. It is the threaded arrangement for the legs I am curious about. Assuming it is just a threaded insert that takes a bolt or screw. When I catch up with you for our wine and listen show I will try to sneak a look. In the meantime you can just dismantle your entire rack, photograph it whenever you get a chance that will be fine!!!Ivor wrote:I'll measure me legs later but just bear in mind.... with a valve amp leave one shelf extra deep so the heat can get out and run about. Re: Hifi Racks
Hi.
I changed my rack about 6 months ago. because my previous Avik rack had too few shelves and my amps were on granite plinths on the floor . I conceived my design from Hi Fi racks which were displayed in Cloney's. I had the rack made in modular style from Junkers solid oak work/top and i bought the spikes and spike wells from Hi Fi Racks on their web site . I spaced the shelves accordingly to my requirements ( which can be changed simply by replacing legs ). The rack is very solid and heavy and sound wise is excellent. I have concrete floors so ground vibrations are not an issue. The project was a success and i included a separately supported lp shelving over it .i later installed cd and lp storage in similar design in my room .Good luck with your project . i will try to include some photos
