Re: BBC R3, CD Review: Shostakovich anyone?
I was really very taken with these two recordings. The Beethoven Violin Sonata was recorded on period instruments and works really well I feel. The Piano Concerto was tremendous. Two more recordings now join my wish list.
Did anyone else listen in? Thoughts perhaps?10.20am Recent Releases

Re: BBC R3, CD Review: Shostakovich anyone?
I didn't listen in Seán but on a general note I do prefer the fortepiano in early chamber music to the modern piano because I feel that the fortepiano does not tend to dominate the other instruments as much as the newer instrument can. This leads to more transparent textures and a better chance for me to hear more clearly the other voices in the ensemble.

Hi Seán
I listened (as I nearly always do). I was interested in the BAL work as I don't know it at all, and I loved the Mullova/Bezuidenhout Beethoven sonatas (I'd seen it somewhere and was already interested...) and the Temirkanov Leningrad Symphony. I've aded those and the winning Jephtha (performed by a team I like anyway) to my current MDT order, which was already too large! I'll send it off shortly before I'm stricken by doubts!

On a serious note the Leningrad performance was stunning too....God! And I agree with Rob Cowen on the MTT/SFSO No 5 recording, I couldn't help but compare it to the Fifth from Kitajenko's latest cycle and it came up short.
