Tony,
The files you need: http://jplay.eu/tc%20shell.7z
Instructions:
Shell replacement
Windows' default shell is explorer.exe. I've recently switched from explorer.exe to total commander 64bit and the results are fantastic. There is a big improvement in dynamics. Music has incredible ease (rise time is much better). Twice as much air around instruments.
All you need to do is copy totalcmd64.exe (for 64bit OS) to Windows\System32\ folder, add Shell_TC.reg to registry and reboot (to go back to standard windows shell, double-click on shell.reg and reboot). Here are the necessary files. WARNING: it is only for 64bit operating system and you apply the tweak on your own risk.
*********************
Just double clicking on the "Shell_TC.reg" file adds it to the registry.
When you reboot, you'll have no desktop, and the screen looks black until total commander opens up. Then you can browse to your jplaymini.exe file and double click it in the normal way and it'll open up fine. All windows programs work as per normal, except you have no desktop shortcuts - you need to browse using total commander to C:\users\yourname\desktop and there you will find them all - double clicking means any program opens as normal. Click on the file (ctrl+click for multiple files) you want then hold the right mouse button until a menu appears and you can copy. Spacebar in jplay as normal then to play.
One slight side effect - I can scroll pages on my laptop pad by dragging on the RHS of the pad - that dissappears with TC.
As you can see above, going back to the standard desktop is easy. Just browse to the "Shell.reg" file in the download above and double click it, and then restart. You will need to use ctrl+alt+del to do this and then click restart on the red power button on the bottom right.
All sounds a bit TLDR, but its actually dead handy.
Next up is to try it with fideliser as well!!

Re: Anyone tried JPlay?
And yes, there is yet another gain from using fideliser with total commander!!
And heres yet another pointer. This laptop had always worked using kernel streaming. Then sudddenly one day, I would get a stutter every 30 secs or so. I tried wasapi and no problems there. It bothered me, but not enough to really find out what had happened.
Still that same story when I tried total commander the other night.
But tonight when I fired up fideliser as well, now only KS will work. So fideliser is turning off some process that messes up my KS normally...... gotta find out what that service is!!
This is probably gobbledegoook unless you're trying out PC audio - but I can say the sound I'm getting is fantastic, really really good.

Re: Anyone tried JPlay?
Don't know about that on first try all I got was black screen!.Gasps could be heard 10 miles away. Switched back to explorer and then gave it another go.It is not for the faint hearted. Have TC up now just need to try it out.I hope its worth the palpitations!Fran wrote:!!!
Not as bad as it sounds!!!
Brief try out of Jplay using that bloody shelby lynne track. I don't hear any further hidden bass notes so all seems ok. Would need to give it a blast for awhile to try and identify changes. Everyone in bed so have to keep the sound down.

Re: Anyone tried JPlay?
I tried everything but that "bloody Shelby Lynne track" Tony and there was a big improvement in sound on my system.
I am a complete Total Commander convert and have not used windows desktop since.
Even when i use JRiver 17 for DSD file playback I launch it from Total Commander and enjoy the music.
Hopefully Josef at JPlay comes up with an even better solution soon, sounds like there is something in the works!!

Re: Anyone tried JPlay?
Just a variation on Kens usb key solution (I left mine at home when bringing the laptop with me) A different way of switching back to windows and TC. I copied the files to a folder on the desktop. If in Total commander you just need to browse to this folder and double click the shell.reg file.

Tony is spot on here. I used the USB method as I ventured into the unknown but the files can be stored anywhere such as the Jplay folder. KM
