Plenty of reviews here..
Seconded, nice little system that and you'd probably secure it with €300.

and 200 buys a lot of speaker these days....

while I would second the opinions of those above re cloneys... I'd also say avoid peats at all costs... cause those are what you'll suffer.... a little exploration online will yield you vastly improved return on your investment... and while you'll pay more than you would online to buy from cloney in blackrock, with them you can see where the money goes... and it goes to customer service....

the chaps in richer sounds Belfast seem to be fairly active on boards.ie, so if you do decide to go new rather than pre- hobbied they'll generally price match....

again echoing previous comments.... what kind of a room will you be putting your new system in, and how much are you willing to allow it to dominate that room...???!!!

...and welcome

Thanks for the heads up on both the system on adverts.ie and the one JFK is selling but I think for now I'd prefer to go new.

I have decided to spend a little more money and go for the Marantz one step above what I originally intended

http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/catalog_v2 ... pe=product

http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/catalog_v2 ... pe=product

with Boston BAA25B Speakers

I got a quote from Peats for €790 if I remember correctly. I don't have the quote infront of me, although I think I might take a trip out to Clooneys for more advice. Although after having a look at the receiver JFK has on offer those look good too. Hmmmm I wish I had someone to tell me what to do!!

I'll be putting the system in my living room I don't know the dimensions, but I don't mind it taking up space or being the feature of that room at all :) I live in an apartment block so god help the neighbours!!

Most of your fellow Tír Na HiFi members will listen to several different set-ups before deciding on what is right for them. You may not want to take that approach. Emma, if you do get a chance to listen to one of your CDs on a hifi set-up and you really like it well then it's probably the kit for you. €790 is alot of money so perhaps you should visit Cloney Audio and see what they recommend; they are very good to deal with, all of their equipment is worth getting and they will provide a good after sales service too including future trade-ins. Tell them the Forum sent you.

Best wishes with it Emma.

Hi Emma , The best thing you can do is have a listen to the NAD receiver i have , i have a small pair of Missions speakers i can hook up to it , its will give you some idea of what good second hand hifi can do .. You may not even have to spend your full budget ( Or you will get hooked and double it !!)

With the little Missions(M30i ) It will be your starting block , then add some Better quality speakers , cables and stands .. I was listening to it today and there is quite a good sound from it ..

Give me a shout if you want to hear it , sure i could arrange to drop it over to you ..(No Obligations ..)

Let me know
All the best ..John

Mmmm I don't know if that's a huge step over the Marantz products at nearly half the price. Don't get me wrong I like Marantz and had many of their boxes in my system over the years but I don't think they're usually worth the extra money for newer models.

I wouldn't be a fan of those speakers either. That's a lot of money for what looks to me like lightweight speakers.

JFK's box, a good CD player & solid speakers would leave a lot of money for CDs!

whatever you do, don't let anyone tell you what to do...!!!!

they're your ears.... get ideas from lots of people, but what sounds great to you (and is something you'll use) is what's best for you...

whether its 500 on a B&W Zeppelin Air, which is my kitchen listening

or 500 on second hand separates

or a high street brand mini system, if it gets your toes tapping, and you love it it's best for YOU..!!!!

Welcome to the forum Emma! Depending on how serious you are about sound, picking a hi fi system can be a doddle or a dithering nightmare! Even after you've got the items home! By all means do the initial listening in the showrooms and listen to whatever advice is being given. It's a given that you make your final choice only after you've auditioned the components at home. However the only people who can give you sensible advice are the specialists guys like Cloney Audio, Kronos and, of course, the nice chaps here. As Jaybee says, stay well clear of the others.

Finally the most important element that will help you decide also is the type of music you listen to. In my case I had to have a reasonably well balanced and not forensically transparent/detailed system to suit the rather eclectic sounds I indulge in, from Experimental to Rock to Classical to Electronic to Solo Piano etc etc This, of course, made my task all the more difficult but I managed to get there in the end! Best of luck :) Oh, and do let us know how you get on...

There's some very nice NAD cd players and amps here, also some focal and tannoy standmount speakers at great prices.
Remember you will need some speaker stands to go with these. Also there is a pair of Tannoy mercury v4 floorstanders for
a very good price.I used a pair of Tannoy mercury m3 for a few years a good while back and i wouldn't think are anywhere near as good as these but were really good speakers.
I think if you took a spin to Kronos you would be coming home with a crackin' little system and a big smile.

even give them a ring. Tell them you're from this forum and expect a good deal. They also have demo/second hand stuff and there's bargains to be had.
