I found this to be a powerful and intensive live performance yet the interpretation was a very sensitive one. The singing from both the soloists and the choir is full of feeling and can be powerfully emotional. The orchestral playing is wonderful and my abiding memory is that of the brass section and in particular the playing of the timpani.

These sonatas are played on a harpsichord with a difference....a pedal harpsichord....

Apparently every Baroque organist worth his salt had one back in the day!! Seriously, it was apparently used by organists as it was obviously easier to practice on one of these than on the organ in the local cathedral.

I do like the Mendelssohn Octet and it is given a really very good performance here.

Fergus, you may be interested in this fascinating recording:

yes, it's technically absolutely splendid, but more importantly, Hope offers two unusual versions of both masterpieces, the Original 1844 version of the VC, and the revised 1832 version of the Octet (where only the Scherzo remained unchanged); a world-premiere recording... there are also 3 lieder for good measure.

I highly recommend this work, tbh...
