sorry Fran, just spotted this now.
I'm not sure why optical isnt more popular but I guess its simpler for everything to be kept in the electrical domain. In theory though optical should be better as in effect you're regenerating the data and timing after the photodiode and from there you hand it over to the DAC which should have its own clean clock anyway. As you know yourself, correct implementation is everything.
