For me one of the acid tests of a conductor is how they get on with a Beethoven cycle. However Walter is a firm favourite with me so this was not an issue in this case; I simply did not have a Beethoven cycle by him.

There are at least two more Beethoven cycles on the List yet to be purshased!

How did you get on with that one Darren? Nagano is not a conductor that I am familiar with.

I will definitely buy the Furtwangler set Darren and I am considering the Chailly cycle. I have heard it but I am not fully convinced by it....I will see.

I have finally completed my first full listen of the Ring with Gotterdammerung....





This is a very lyrical and very appealing work and there are some really wonderful pieces of music in this opera.

Hi Fergus, have you given any consideration to getting the Vänskä/Minnesota Orchestra cycle? It is very good. I will give the Chailly a miss, I have heard some of it and it doesn't move me. I will get the Walter & Furtwangler sets but I won't join you on your Beethoven quest at this time, enjoy.

I wasn´t too happy with the Chailly either Seán, and feel very frustrated because I really wanted a top modern cycle with the great Gewandhaus Orchestra, but it was not to be.
