No one present knew that that was going to be the great baritone´s last live appearance, but while the audience was still applauding, soprano Julia Varady (DFD´s wife) appeared and announced the sad news.

Falstaff, composed when Verdi was well over 80 is one of the supreme masterpieces of musical theatre and crowning achievement glory of the great old man. The libretto by Arrigo Boito is one of the finest opera libretti of all time. No wonder Richard Stauss chose it for an imaginary museum-like opera house he wanted to build were only the greatest operas will be performed.

Thank you Pepe, based on the fact that I at least am familiar with the story, I have scoured around on Amazon, and think I might have come up trumps with a purchase.



£9.99 plus P&P which over in the UK is a bargain for this Blu Ray of a Glyndebourne performance.. so, I'm going to give it a go.

I have been making my way quickly through this set and, as usual in a set of this size, sometimes one stops to pause at one thing in particular. In this case it was the Well Tempered Klavier Part 1, No. 1 [BWV846]; there is something extra special in the music of the Praeludium section of this piece.

It's a mind-scrambler, isn't it? It's one of the reasons why I've been putting off a purchase of 'The Art of The Fugue', which Simon informs me, even brings tears to his eyes...

I think The Art of Fugue is incredible music, I just find it hard to listen to! Sod it, I'll stick it on now and see how I get on.
