Schubert – Symphonies 4-6 played by the Putbus Festival Orchestra/Keitel...



Having liked what I heard with the first three symphonies I continued recently with nos. 4-6. Here again the speeds are brisk and the touch is light; as a result the textures are very transparent and the music shines through. No. 5 was a delight....a mixture of delicacy and drive. I also liked the added orchestral “weight” that was evident in the Scherzo and Finale of No. 6.

I bought that one many years ago in Edinburgh and it is still the only version that I have. Did you like it Dave?

Oh, what do you make of the great man's Titan? His Mahler Fifth and Ninth are really splendid.

This performance has a different, indefinable feel to it Seán. The re-mastered recording was made in 1957 and the stereo sound quality is superb. It certainly would be a recommendation.

I've reached the stage when I wonder whether I can justify buying more recordings of Mahler symphonies. I must have about a dozen of each!

I have about 16 or 17 M1's, I've lost count, and more on my wish list. I don't have many M8's and Das Lied although I am buying a couple of copies of Das Lied and am always on the lookout for recommendations.

DLvdE: 1. Boulez and 2a. Bernstein or 2b. Kletzki for DFD in the baritone alternative, 3 . Baker/King/Haitink. The piano version is interesting too: Fassbaender/Moser/Katsaris. I haven't heard Tilson Thomas's recording (with Thomas Hampson in the baritone alternative), but I did hear his tenor (Stuart Skelton) in DLvdE at the NCH a few months ago and he was excellent.

I have the Solti and the Chailly is already on my wish list. I am curious about Sinopli's Mahler as I already have his Seventh. Boulex and Gergiev...I hadn't considered them.

Boulez again! I have and love the Baker/King/Haitink....in fact it's my favourite version. Do you like Klemperer or Reiner then?
