The Whisperer came much later John. I was talking about the real early days when I knew nothing about music or hi fi for that matter....ie the black and white days :)

I remember those days too Dermot I had a little transistor radio that was tuned to 208MW(Lux) most of the time but used to change over to BBC to listen to John Peel first time I ever heard Tangerine Dream and Van Der Graff Generator and in keeping with the thread title I'm listening to these now.
Tell me about your accident.

this band helped to keep some of us sane (is that the right word!!) during the 70's. Recently reconnected with a friend in France after over 30 years. Stayed a week at his place where among other gems he had the entire (just about) Van Der G and Peter Hammill from that era output on original vinyl. Many happy listening hours with generous helpings of vin rouge!!

Ah! It's a joy forever having you back John :) 208 MW = Nostalgia.... Terrific albums too though I missed out on Godbluff!
I remember clearly one night when Kid played this live side long track called Nantucket Sleighride by a certain group called Mountain. I was completely transfixed for the whole 17 mins plus and I swear I could make out Felix Papalardi's growling, fuzzy bass on the little tranny pressing against my ears in the dark in bed! Leslie's second guitar solo was sublime and I can still play it note for note in this little head of mine :) Do, do do do doooo, do, do do dooo.....

Have spotted a 'new' Lp in Tower by VDGG called A Grounding In Numbers. I'd say it's out a while now. Wonder what it's like?

Sorry John, just seeing this now. I ended up in hospital! Missed my footing out side St. Patrick's church Dundalk after mass about 4 weeks ago, as I skipped down the 25 granite steps. I was too busy checking my change for yet another collection! Hurled into space, landed on my right leg and managed to completely rupture my quadricep just above the knee! Crunch :( Had the op. in the Lourdes Drogheda and arrived home a week later to find my beloved hi-fi room turned into a temporary bedroom. Eek! I've come on in leaps and bounds (pun intended!) since . However, I'm in for long, long recovery period and lots and lots of physio. Some say 8 weeks, others say 6/9 months before I'm back fully functioning again....I know one thing, my cycling days are over for this year anyway :(

Jeez Dermot that sounds serious sorry to hear your bad news hope you make a full recovery pretty soon.
On a different note I remember John Peel playing Van Der Graffs "Undercover Man" one evening and describing it as their Eurovision entry for that year!
