Dvorak: Symphonic Works [Box set] on Amazon - it looks good.

Post by Seán »

Supraphon will release an eight cd box set of Dvorak's symphonic works in April. At the time of writing it will cost £18.99 but one never knows with Amazon. Anyway this is the blurb from Amazon:
Few other composers music enjoys such enormous popularity and is as frequently performed on stages worldwide and recorded as that of Antonín Dvoák. And it is the symphonic works that are connected with his name most often. The new Supraphon eight-disc box features several complete sets and encompasses Dvoáks most significant symphonic pieces. Alongside the Symphonic Poems and Concert Overtures, Supraphon is releasing for the first time on CD Václav Neumanns sensitively remastered 1972-74 analogue recordings of the complete symphonies (until now, only the digital recordings from the 1980s had been released on CD). Václav Neumann linked up to the Czech Philharmonic Orchestras bold Dvoák tradition in the wake of his illustrious predecessors Václav Talich and Karel Anerl and developed it in sonic colourfulness and romantic sweep. Following two complete sets of chamber works (the Panocha Quartet etc., SU 3815-2, SU 3921-2) and the complete essential piano pieces (Radoslav Kvapil, SU 4018- 2), you can now add to your music library another of the worlds of Dvoáks amazing oeuvre, in a highly acclaimed interpretation with the seal of the Czech Dvoák tradition. The complete Dvoák symphonic works with Václav Neumanns romantic sweep for the first time on CD.

Have you any thoughts: good, bad or indifferent on this release?

I've been waiting to get the Neumann cycle for a while now. I will be getting this when it comes out - looks like a great price!

^^ very highly rated and an absolute winner... I can't see how either of you can go wrong with that set. I don't think I'll be joining you however, as I have the Kertesz and Kubelik sets as it is, neither of which get much airplay these days. I do however have my eyes on the String Quartet boxset by the Panocha, in the same series...

I don't have either of those boxsets and I'm not sure if I would spend much time listening to the Neumann cycle either. I am revisiting my collection now and I am intent on building up my collection of Bach recordings. We'll see.
