I don't know it (oh, the shame of it all!) but I like Sheppard. That reminds me that somebody "borrowed" my one and only Sheppard disc a while ago and has since moved to South Africa. It might require a repurchase!

I certainly have friends like that, regarding my World Cinema DVD collection (although South Africa is a bit extreme.. I'm sure the Med would have sufficed) ... mercifully, no-one I know is at all interested in borrowing any of my CDs.

I struggle to look past the Tallis Scholars in any of this repertoire to be honest, and that's the only version I own. I'm sure there are lots of other groups these days who could do it justice, The Sixteen, Stile Antico, etc., but I haven't pursued them.

What I *don't* need is some Cathedral Choir or other hacking its way through it, everyone warbling all over the place...

^^ agree with everything you've said.. it's generally tTS or t16 for me in this type of repertoire, although I believe Tenebrae are also excellent.

Tim Thurston played the Kings recording with Goodman as treble this morning on his show, and promises a variety of other readings of the piece during Lent. The Kings recording (in English) appealed to me far more than I was expecting. Apparently, Goodman arrived in from the rugby pitches only for David Willcocks to tell him he was singing the treble solo. The recording was made during the course of evensong. I love this kind of snapshot in time recording.

It will be interesting to see what other recordings he plays over the next few weeks. I seem to recall hearing one that attempts to closer recreate the original with strange chromatic runs, etc. I think you can listen back to the show on the Lyric FM website if you're so inclined.
