BBC iPlayer

Post by Jared »

Hi Folks,

This is just a quick question... how easily/ well are you able to pick up BBC iPlayer in Dublin, if for instance you wished to watch a TV Programme on BBC4?

Is reception now consistently good, or does it depend on where you live/ time of day or even year? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Well, the quick answer is that you can't use the iPlayer unless you're in the UK: it checks the user's IP address to see where it's based. There are ways around this, of course, but I've never tried them.

^^ ah, well that's answered that one then! I hadn't realised it was IP domain related.

Thanks, Simon...

Something similar with Radio3: you can listen back on the iPlayer for a week after the programme: you can't download the podcast.

hmm... you guys appear to be giving me contradictory advice here... Simon seems to be saying you can't watch/ listen at all unless you get round a domain issue because you're oputside of the UK. Ciaran, you're saying you can for 7 days after the scheduled programme (just like we can in the UK), but can't download the programme.

my Simple question is this... and I'd like to use an example if I may... last night, BBC Four showed a film 'Lourdes' by Austrian director, Jessica Hausner, which will remain on the iPlayer for the next 6 days... would any of you be able to click on this link and watch it, or not?

many thanks.

HI Jared

If I click that link, I get the message:

"Currently BBC iPlayer TV programmes are available to play in the UK only, but all BBC iPlayer Radio programmes are available to you. Why?

If you are in the UK and see this message please read this advice.

Go to the BBC iPlayer Radio homepage"

That agrees with what we said: iPlayer radio: yes, iPlayer TV: no.

You can watch iPlayer etc if you have a proxy IP address. It's not something I've done myself but a quick search found
Go to the following page and look for a UK server

http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html

Then in Internet Explorer go to Tool>Internet Option>Connections>Lan Settings and enter the IP address and port number and this may do the trick for you. You may need to restart Internet Explorer before the settings take effect.
Vinyl -anything else is data storage.

If you use a proxy DNS you can usually get around this. Very commonly done for netflix users for example.... bigger range of stuff available on the US version compared to the Irish version I'm told. T'interweb should provide your answer...
Do or do not, there is no try
