my slight criticism with this set is that the orchestration is a little on the muddy/ subdued side, and as is quite common with Masur, I find the interpretations a little on the pedestrian side

...a criticism I concur with...

I often have this problem with Kurt Masur, Darren... I think I've mentioned this before; but I still think they are very enjoyable pieces, but we don't seem to have an array of versions to choose from... such a pity.

Yes, I still haven't got round to the Bruch cycle but most of the Masur in my collection has been disappointing up to a point.

Schubert - Piano Sonata in G major, D894 (Wilhelm Kempff, DG)

Some day in the distant future someone will do a "Month" on that one and convince me that it is as wonderful as his Symphonic and Chamber Music because, unfortunately for me, I still do not see it that way!?!?

Some day in the distant future someone will do a "Month" on that one and convince me that it is as wonderful as his Symphonic and Chamber Music because, unfortunately for me, I still do not see it that way!?!?

Fergus, perhaps you might consider asking Don Clark (Donaldopato on CMG) for his evaluaton of D960, it is very good indeed. If you don't like Kempff's performance in that set then perhaps you should give up on Schubert's Sonatas altogether, unless you want to try Clara Haskil (wow!) instead and/or Radu Lupu, just to be sure, to be sure.

Thank you Seán. I think that the problem lies in my direction rather than Kempff's interpretations. Like you I really like Schubert's music but it has not translated into these works I am afraid. Another traversal is required soon methinks.

Ken hasn't been around for a long time and doesn't generate angry responses by the photographer or the composer whereas Jack most certainly does, it's quite extraordinary really as he is an entirely inoffensive guy, I didn't always agree with him, in fact some of his recommendations were truly awful but he was mannerly in his approach at all times.

Don't worry I won't start up on Mad Yawn, sorry I mean Vaughan...LOL!
