I was talking to my father yesterday and he was asking me about the best way of storing his music collect.
He's just sick of looking at his cd collection in the corner and wants to rip them and be able to easily accessible them on some media streamer or whatever..
Has anybody any idea of his options that can be done on the cheap??
Options on storing CD collection.
Re: Options on storing CD collection.
Itunes would seem to be the easiest to rip and organise. Some kind of dac between amp and I think thats all he needs but some of the more dac/media men will give a definitive solution.
Another idea would be arcam rdock which is a nifty remote controlled unit that connects to an amp. So just an ipod and that. I think the rdock is €170 in cloneys. The sound is very good. I have an older non remote control one.

There are 3 routes to ripping, to a PC or to a NAS or a dedicated proposition like vortebox.
To stream the ripped music, one needs a receiver of some description, an apple airport, a squeezebox to connect to an amp or a dedicated player like a naim Uniti. Depending on what quality you want there may have to be a dac in the mix too.
If quality is an issue I wouldn't rip with Itunes into a propitiatory apple format. I use dBpoweramp to rip to flac but it can rip to almost any format.
To give you a more precise answer it would be useful to know what your dad uses at the moment to listen to his CDs, what computer equipment he has and what you mean by cheap.

Check if your dads CD player has a digital input. If so he could feed the digital output from a Squeezebox [or the Sonus equivalent] into it and get a similar sound as from his CDs. My suggestion is to rip the CDs to FLAC first. And Use a specialist free application like Exact Audio Copy to do so. This is time consuming [10 to 15 minutes per CD] but the sound quality is worth the effort.
It's OK, if there is no bread I will eat cake.

My father is using Pioneer G-Clef SACD player and Pioneer A-A9 amp with B&W cdm1 se speakers. The cd player has coaxial and opitical inputs.
He is trying to get rid of some cd's while still holding on to some of his favourites. So is just looking for something easy to use like a squeezebox??I don't
think quality is really important..

Ok, popping my head above the parapet here as I know nothing about it, but the Brennan JB7 might be worth considering. Look here

Anybody tried it?

A fiend of mine has the Brennan and loves it and he has a fairly serious main system.
It is a very basic interface though and considering the cdp has an option to feed in from a squeezebox this may3be the way to go, ripping to itunes if sound is not that crucial. This does however involve one in always having the PC on when listening to music and a wired or wireless connection to the squeezebox. And as user friendly as these things are they can still be frustrating.
The Brennan on the other hand will work if it turns on.
