Building a Library - an update on the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610. Simon Heighes looks at some recent recordings of this ever popular choral work which four hundred years ago bridged the Renassiance with the Baroque. Until recently the vogue seemed to be to deploy the full panoply of Monteverdi's instrumentation for maximum variety and impact but recently a more subtle, maybe more historically accurate approach has been essayed on disc. So which is the recording to go for in this anniversary year?
