Quick ques - what do you guys do for insurance to cover your hi-fi systems and music collections? Given most are separates etc. Any point in tracking serial numbers?
I'm guessing some items on various online sites (obviously not referring to tirnahifi) have been lifted in all the home robberies that are talked about.
Insuring/Securing your system
Re: Insuring/Securing your system
I was away for a couple of weeks at the start of the year and must confess to taking a couple of nervous looks at various second hand trading sites just in case!
Re: Insuring/Securing your system
Mine is included on the house insurance, not named specifically, but covered by the overall amount and subject to a rule that no one item can be more than a certain percentage of the whole. I've clarified it with them at every renewal and it's just not an issue. Your policy may be different of course, but if you're not taking stuff out of the house it's all basically ok. You only need to specifically name stuff you take out of the house regularly.

Re: Insuring/Securing your system
I supply the insurance company with a spreadsheet detailing each piece and it's retail or replacement value and the serial number. I assumed this was "normal".

Re: Insuring/Securing your system
Somewhat similar to the above. My items are covered under the general house hold insurance but any items over $5K had to be explicitly named and for items over $15K I had to provide an MSRP from the manufacturer.

From experience dealing with my customer's claims, always value 10-20% above replacement value.
They seem stop arguing at about 80% of your declared replacement value when it comes time to cash in. At least that's hw I've found it with cars.
