I feel like the community is very tight and supportive here, and everyone is happy to agree or disagree in as friendly a manner as possible. It feels like a bunch of friends chatting about a shared passion and it's a pleasure to be a small part of it!
that's a really lovely post, Darren... I feel that this place is like chatting informally in your own front room with a few friends, whereas the other place resembles being a very junior member in a cross between a gentleman's club and a reference library...
and, at times, a war zone too.

well a little bit, and of course that's a shame. I guess that when you get a group of individuals together who by and large are educated, elderly and very knowledgeable on all aspects of classical music, that their opinions can become a little inflexible.

This one simply goes straight to the top of the pile!
hmm nice one Fergus. By far my favorite choral piece. The Herreweghe version has been top of the pile for me for a long time but I'll certainly be checking out the above.
It is certainly a strong recommendation Dave.

To be fair one also has to be very mindful of the huge cultural differences that exist on both sides of the Atlantic; it is something that I am very conscious and the do not understand language nuances as we do. I find, as a result, one has to be very careful not only what one says but how one says it. Here, because we essentially speak the same language, it is therefore just that little bit more relaxed.

I don't know the other place to which you refer, but I've noticed that as a general rule, classical music is enjoyed by a much greater cross-section of society in Europe than it seems to be in the US. It seems to come with a huge amount of snobbish baggage over there. At least, that was my experience many years ago.

that would be the conclusion I have also drawn, Simon.

Greetings everybody!!!!

My name is Matt (ravel30) and I am from Canada. It is thanks to the recommendation of a good friend of mine (you know who you are) that I am now joining what looks like a great forum. I am happy to be part of a forum that includes contributors that I come to like and respect that I had the chance to know on another classical music forum. Warm salutations to Jared, Fergus and Sean. I am looking forward to get to know the rest of you.

I listened to the superb Symphonie Fantastique and the Carnival Overture by Berlioz with the LSO conducted by Colin Davis

Davis is a fantastic Berlioz conductor, in my opinion.

Regards,

Matt.

Welcome on board Matt! Hope you enjoy yourself on our small but active forum. I think I know the other classical forum you're talking about ;-) . I venture there from time to time but I'm not really an active poster there.

Good choice on the Berlioz above. I have the version Davis did with the Concergebouw and its pretty good I think.
