Wowie!! On the turntable, 10 sides of vintage Zappa guitar to keep me enthralled this weekend.
"Music is the best" indeed...... from the Father of Invention :-)
Shut up and listen....
"Until the release of this album, only a few people realised what the hard-core Zappa fanatics had known all along.......that FZ could play the guitar.
While the papers and magazines shouted the praises of every other guitar stangler and condemned Zappa for having the guts to sing lyrics they felt were disgusting, he quietly continued to play things on his instrument that were far more blasphemous than any words could convey. In the rush to be offended by what he said, the music press forgot to listen to what his guitar was talking about. Zappa's guitar solos, as captured on this album, say a lot of things that might just prove to be embarrassing to the writers who forgot to listen"
Rock - what are you listening to?
Re: Rock - what are you listening to?
Dipping into some more Zappa later :) This a double vinyl set which I picked up in a tiny upstairs record shop in Parliament St. a long time ago. Anyone remember it?
Re: Rock - what are you listening to?
.....and more :)
Re: Rock - what are you listening to?
....finally. Bought this on the day he died.....Even now I cannot believe how little of Zappa I actually have! They all passed me by for some obscure reason....
Re: Rock - what are you listening to?
Nice choices, Dermot. Freak Out was an amazing debut but my favourite albums from the original Mothers of Invention lineup remain We're Only In It For The Money, Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Uncle Meat. Hot Rats is one of Zappa's best albums and contains some of his finest guitar work. Later albums that I'm very fond of include Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo, One Size Fits All, Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt, Joe's Garage and the vastly underrated Jazz From Hell.
Gryphon Diablo 300, dCS Rossini (with matching clock), Kharma Exquisite Mini, Ansuz C2, Finite Elemente Master Reference.
Re: Rock - what are you listening to?
Gonna have to start diggin' for more Zappa vinyl methinks starting with your list Paul :-) Would you believe I actually had a second hand original vinyl of "Unkle Meat" but it was so badly warped it was unplayable! Despite my very best attempts to "unwarp" it - using a hair dryer from the Costume Dept. and two extremely heavy cast iron marking out blocks from the workshop!! Don't worry I knew exactly what I was doing! I remember the bits I did actually hear were amazing....mcq wrote:Nice choices, Dermot. "When the canvas frays
in the currach of thought
and a stain of ocean
blackens beneath you,
may there come across the waters
a path of yellow moonlight
to bring you safely home"
