Symphony No. 5....

Image

The strings sound beautiful in the lovely, taught performance of the first movement. The second movement has some very tender playing in places and is simply beautiful. The waltz of the third movement leads on to a powerful orchestral display in the fourth movement that is based on a strong theme at the beginning of the movement that works towards a powerful and optimistic conclusion with very strong playing carrying the day.

I really will have to get a copy of that set.

Earlier tonight:

Image

Felix Mendelssohn
String Quartet in E Op. 12
String Quartet in D Op. 44 No. 1
String Quartet in D Op. 44 No. 2
Gewandhaus Quartett

These are very enjoyable performances of very pleasant music that is not in the same realm as Beethoven and Schubert but is still very stimulating; the performances here are by the very impressive Gewandhaus Quartett.

Franz Schubert
Piano Trio No. 1

Klaviertrio amsterdam

Schubert's music is really splendid and the Klaviertrio of Joan Berkhemer (violin), Nadia David (cello) and Klara Würtz (piano) carry it off really well I feel.
