All the best
Brent Smith
17th of May you mean ;-) Great news and the very best of luck to you....
A couple of weeks ago I met Brent and he kindly gave me a set of the stands for evaluation. Although I was ostensibly collecting these for Fran I couldn’t resist taking them out of their impressive packaging and assembling them myself (I don't think either Brent or Fran expected me to resist!).
I have to say the build quality is extraordinary. These really are wonderfully designed and engineered and just holding them and admiring the design took up the first 30 minutes or so!
It became apparent quite quickly that these stands, primarily designed for bookshelf speakers or modest floorstanders would not accommodate my large Quad 989s. Even when the stands were set at their deepest and widest they could not provide a stable base for those monsters - it’s no reflection on the stands, they could probably handle the shorter Quad 63s, but the 989s were just too much.
My “plan b” was to try a pair of B&W floorstanders I use as ‘fronts’ in a cinema setup but I then realised these were fixed to plinths and they were an absolute bitch to fit (they were designed for larger B&Ws and required quite a bit of fettling) so… the only other suitable speakers were modest Castle floorstanders but as they provide the ‘sides’ in the cinema they really wouldn’t provide much of a reference so I decided to take the stands apart and repack them for Fran to try out. It’s a pity really, I do believe stands of that quality would make a difference and Quads really benefit from a bit of a tilt but there ye go…..
I believe Fran has sourced a suitable pair of bookshelf speakers so let’s wait and see how he finds them.
Fran wrote:Yes, I lined up some speakers and just unpacked these last night. I haven't "heard" them yet, but gotta say, the build quality is excellent.
Getting on very well. I'm nearly finished the sessions with them, just a few more things to examine.
Once you get over the sticker shock, they are a very well made product. The key thing with them that is different to all other stnads that I've ever seen is their ability for infinite variation of position. This means that its very easy to try out lots of positions that normally would not be possible. And here's the kicker - you can do that repeatably, reliably and matching one side to the other. Because of this, you can make your exiting speakers sound better I think.
I'm writing up a full review, and I don't want to pre-empt that, but to me, that is where their strength lies.

Fair enough, will look forward to the full review so....
