You are right about the bargains Jared but that is a lot of catching up for you to do! I was in that position about 6 or 7 months ago and I just stopped buying completely until I had nothing new on the shelf that was not listened to....but then it started all over again!!!

I'm afraid, that is what I intend to do... you'll remember that I bought a new CD rack about 4-6 weeks ago? Well, I think I've been a little over-eager to fill the spaces, when of course in time, I'm sure they will fill themselves... ;-))

Jared wrote:there are obviously some Bernarda Fink fans on this forum, so I noticed that Harmonia Mundi were selling this excellent disk of Schumann Lieder, rather cheaply:

I have order one for myself, and realise they must have several copies for sale...
That's a beautiful disc, Jared. Do look out for her recording of Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben as well as this touching performance of Schubert lieder.

Jared wrote:another bargain for your attention, although this one is perhaps a little more specialised than the previous two.

I have been listening to a disk of Grieg's folk-lieder, sung by Ann Sophie von Otter recently, and I don't think I have heard her sound so warm and vibrant. The songs are markedly different from say Schubert lieder... softer in tone, but harmonious and well constructed. Anyway, this is a Penguin Guide 4 star, key recording disk:

so, buy with confidence!
A fine choice, Jared. Her version of Grieg's masterpiece, Haugtussa, will probably never be surpassed. Monica Groop's version in her complete set (available on BIS) is also very satisfying. Do look out for von Otter's recording of Brahms lieder (on DG), as well. A little tricky to find nowadays, but worth the effort.

^^ the Grieg disk certainly is a gem, it's had quite a few listens recently. As with the Schumann disk, if I see something of such high quality as this online, going for a bargain price, I like to let others in on the secret... its a great way of building up our libraries.

The Brahms has registered with me before, but I realise its harder to get. A 2nd hand one sold recently on ebay for about £15...

for those interested, the Telemann: Orchestral Suites by Pinnock on Archiv, looks to be a very good deal... I've never seen it remotely this cheap:

(go for the Music Overstocks one... they're a good company.. )

if this purchase doesn't speak for itself, then I can't do it further justice... Piano Quintet, Quartet & 3 Trios on 2 CDs, most people's benchmark set of these fabulous works.... for under a fiver...

quite ridiculous...
