henry Rollins blogs on vinyl

"As an LP spins, your needle goes on the musical journey with you, traveling great distances as it deftly picks up the analog information and delivers the sonic message to you in real time. Vinyl is the people, a CD is the man. "

What a perfect day. Thanks for that Ivor (and Henry too!!). You know it makes sense. :-)
Listen to the Kate Bush interview on another thread about her 'old' new album and her thoughts on analogue mastering.....

"Yes, yes, y'all, it's not hipster, elitist hype -- vinyl sounds better. Much better. There is actual music in those grooves. Technically speaking, there is no music whatsoever on a CD. Lots of information but no music. Digital technology has made great strides to deliver a series of numbers to be read by a laser to emit that which is doing its damnedest to replicate its analog and sonically superior master."

"Perhaps the mightiest slap in the face of music has been the music file, easily downloaded and put into a playback device. This format strips the meat from the bone. Imagine an orange, squeezed by a gorilla. It's still an orange, but in name only. If Otis Redding could hear his music on MP3, he'd wonder what hack was trying to impersonate him."

Actually, what I meant was I'm resisting adding my usual rant about such articles... :)

Get thee behind me, Satan!

(Actually, I'll cheerfully admit that I might prefer the sound of vinyl, and indeed that everyone with an ear might prefer the sound of vinyl. It boils my blood when I see this preference being attributed to the fact that "there's music in the grooves rather than just data", or similar. Stating that as some kind of objective truth annoys the sh*t out of me. As I've said before, like what you like by all means, but don't claim that it signifies any kind of objective truth, and for God's sake don't pretend to understand the science if you don't.)

Should say that by "you" here, I'm referring to Henry Rollins, rather than to any forum members. I'd appreciate if you didn't tell him that, though. I think he could probably take me in a fight.

"there's music in the grooves rather than just data"

I'd agree with Simon. Statements like this are a complete load of bollox.

On the other hand I've had the chance to compare similar classical recordings on both CD and vinyl over the last few weeks and I do prefer the vinyl in most cases. But to me it's down the mastering rather than a flaw in the CD medium.

This thread aint gonna end well me thinks!

Oh I'd say we're safe enough...!

Actually I've been thinking about this. The best way to shut me up on this issue once and for all is for all the forum members to chip together and set me up with a turntable and phono stage to surpass my Wadia 581SE. I'll also need a few records to get me started.

Go on!! What do yiz say???
