I'm sure I've seen a plug in device for an iphone/iTouch that acts as an infrared transmitter remote control. I wonder if there's something similar for Android? But then you would have to leave your Android phone at home for family to change channels :) Not very practical.

You could pick up an Ipod touch secondhand fairly cheaply.
Or, there are a lot of Chinese companies making bad android tablets that would be perfect as a single use remote contoll.
My brother has one, he picked it up for €200 including shipping on alibaba for the hell of it. It's useless for touchscreen typing but it would be the job as a remote. It has piles of ports, Ethernet, usb, optical audo, etc... Beats apple there!
