Symphony 8

A bold assertive performance here, full of energy and drive. I reckon though that the Hogwood version has the more interesting sound palette and I found that with Symphony 7 too.

Despite these being mono recordings from 1928-37, the sound quality is surprisingly good.

As well as the Requiem, this disc also includes two other Mozart works, KV 477 and KV 411. As for the Requiem itself I believe this is the non Sussmayr version. I thoroughly enjoyed this performance which is no surprise given that its probably my favorite choral work. As good as it is though, it doesnt quite have the beauty and balance of Hogwood's effort. The choir and Emma Kirkby's singing in that version are exceptional imho and I've yet to come across a performance that knocks it off my top stop.

Note that the cover of the one I have is not the same as shown above. I have seen it in Tower recently too.

This is one of the older discs in my collection which I play from time to time. I really like the fortepiano in this type of music and setting.
Fergus, I have also been playing Mozart Piano Trios today; K496 & K502 Pires/ Dumay/ Wang on DG... I think they're sublime... ;-))

Very interesting comments Dave. I don't have any recordings by Hogworth but I have to confess that having acquired the Beethoven cycle by Bruggen and the 18th Century guys that I have "fallen deeply in love" with them. Hogwood nust rate very highly so. I must have a look out for both CDs in Tower.

...back to the Gardiner set this evening. This time Symphony 6.

Wow! Probably the best 6th I've heard to date.
