My turntable is sick!

Post by Taibhreamh »

Hello,
I have a signal problem on my turntable where one of the channels output is much lower. So I am looking for a good repair guy in Dublin or Ireland? Has anyone used the Hifi Hospital or have other suggestions? Real electronic engineers are few and far between.

The turntable is a Pioneer PL 570 (heavy 70's model). And for those interested in vintage stereos I use it daily and it runs on 120 with a rack system which is also all 70's Pioneer - Spec 1 & 2 (pre & power amp), PD 70 (CD), TX 9800 (Tuner), SG 9800 (equalizer), CT F1250 & 950 (tapedecks) going via Soundlab cable out to 2 Mission 763's speakers. Sorry about the poor image.

Started out with vintage then went new which I was never happy with and then finally back to my current set up. Anyway any help would be great.

Welcome to the forum Taibhreamh,

I don't have a clue to your TT table problem, however perhaps some of the others here would have a idea.

That sure is a great photo of your kit, its like a equipment rack out of mission control in NASA!!

Reminds me of that line "Ground control to Major Tom....."

Good to see somebody who appreciates ze older stuff!!

Why has everything suddenly got smaller? Welcome to the forum T. The tt problem sounds like a preamp problem to me....Is it the same with the other sources?

If you can it's worth doing a little investigation on your own first. Start by trying the tt input into one of the line inputs....... you'll have to crank the amp up a lot to hear anything and it won't sound right, but it should be enough to know if it's the cartridge or not that's off on one side. If it's still off on one side then it's the cartridge. If it's ok, then it's most likely the phonostage part of the preamp.

Try that much and report back......

nice system btw, I lusted after a ct950 until I got my akai....

I have a signal problem on my turntable where one of the channels output is much lower

Try switching the phono leads into the preamp and see if the problem switches channels ...

thanks for the replies. I did some investigations i.e. tried a second cartridge (I have a 2nd headshell), plugged the tt into the 2nd phono (my preamp has 2 phono inputs) and also the tuner/CD/tape inputs are all fine. So I don't think its the amp or at least I hope it's the tt. thanks

thanks James, I tried switching the inputs around on the back of the amp and the signal came in equal for both channels but the right is a bit 'grainy' so this would make me think there in a break in the leads near the jack. I was thinking of upgrading the leads so this make solve the problem. thanks again

Hi, now both channels are the same strenght but I am getting static back in both as soon as I move the arm and the table starts to spin (before the stylus goes down on the record). Its the same in both phono 1 & 2. So either both phono inputs have a problem or its the tt. I wished I'd kept my Rega as a spare tt. Great site by the way, I usually just read what others are saying.

Awesome looking kit.

Maybe pair it with Quad 57s for the ultimate wife-unfriendly set-up!

Broken ground wire from the tt to the phonostage, or maybe a poor connection at the headshell?
