OK it's American, but it has spread, check the list of Irish shops taking part under international stores, give lots of food for thought.

I do miss rummaging through banks of vinyl...

The end definitely seems to be nigh alright. My work colleagues think it's only hysterical that I still buy CDs, and you can imagine the reaction when I say that I consider illegal downloading morally wrong.

That said, I don't really weep for the record stores. To me they were generally infuriating places where I couldn't get what I wanted. So many times I had to place special orders for classical discs which might take weeks to come in, if they arrived at all. By the time I was in my late teens most discs were getting up to the 17 or 18 pound area, which was just very expensive if you wanted to put together a collection. While I miss rooting through shelves sometimes, I'm much happier being able to get what I want at a competitive price.

and the quality unlistenable.

the line up pretty good though...
‎Record Store Day line up in Tower Records 16th April....LYKKI LI, STEVE MASON, THE ANSWER, HAWK & A HACKSAW, Enemies, Squarehead, The Kanyu Tree, Ham Sandwich....plus we'll be having acoustic sessions upstairs throughout the day...watch this space for line up! It's going to be musical awesomeness!!
Lykki Li alone would be worth a visit.

Thanks lads you've just gone and ruined my day ;-) Reading down the list of record shops that have closed their doors I was surprised to find that City Discs are there too! Anybody know when they ceased trading?

That was a few months back, Derek picked up a lot of bargains as they cleared the shelves (as I did myself) but nobody knew they were actually going to close. Very sad to lose them, they were a great shop.

Anyone pick up anything interesting today? I picked up a live Bob Dylan LP that I havent seen before and a few Hendrix EPs. To my surprise there was a Tim Buckley EP there also which I picked up. A few other bits and bobs too. There was quite a crowd in Tower in the afternoon which made browsing near impossible so I'm glad I was town early this morning. I also visited the rest of the small record stores but I was a little disappointed in what they had available. Tower made a good effort I thought.

I kinda cheated. I treated my local Oxfam as an indepenant record store (which it is!) and took a stroll down. I'm glad I did as while their vinyl stock is erratic today was a good day.

Jeez Ivor. Did you get Tin Drum and Jukebox on vinyl ? Jammy !
Both in my top 50 for ages. On CD though. I had the Japan disc on vinyl and it went missing.
I love the track "Blue" on Cat Powers one.
