The Bach Collegium Japan/Suzuki recording of Bach's St John Passion was the recommended performance.

I'll be getting the Suzuki soon! I was very impressed by what I heard.

Also in the last lap were
  • Pierlot and the Ricercar Consort (OVPP, just out: I buy their Bach automatically so mine was posted on Wednesday, I hope it arrives soon!)
  • Parrott (which I have): OVPP and extremely cheap! And very very good, in a box which also includes his terrific b minor Mass!
  • Gardiner's new live recording
Herreweghe's recording of the second version sounded interesting, and the excerpts that were played sounded good.

I was interested that Simon Heighes mentioned and wasn't hugely taken with the version with Chapelle Rhenane under Benoit Haller which came out a few months ago. I bought it on the basis of a very enthusiastic notice in International Record Review, but I didn't take greatly to it, so I was interested that SH wasn't that keen either.
