Vinyl in the Attic: I need a Turntable!

I have recently begun to attempt to begin to clear out my attic. That sentence my look and sound inarticulate but if you saw my attic you would immediately understand. Now one of the interesting things that I have recently unearthed up there is a small collection of vinyl. Some of this vinyl is quite old so I am not sure what condition it is in. There are even some 78’s up there!
Anyway, to help me to preserve my sanity whilst trying to get to grips with the task in hand, this afternoon I unboxed a crappy old Sony turntable on which to play some of this music. Now the Sony does produce a sound but that is about all that I can say about it. Having given this small vinyl collection a quick scan there is definitely some stuff there that I would be interested in having a serious listen to.
I have now arrived at a point where I thought that I would never return to! I am now looking for a Turntable!! I am not looking for anything fancy or expensive just something a step or two above entry level would do me just fine. I am looking for suggestions and recommendations please as well as pointers as to what to look out for. This is not a major priority but any help at all would be appreciated.
