Reel to Reel spools

Hi all,

I'm looking for some info on reel to reel spools .... I have a R2R deck, but I'm missing a 7" spool to take up the tape. Any of you know are all of these the same center pin? I've seen plenty on ebay etc, but some seem to have different spindles than others.

Any clues?

As far as I know the uptake reel is the same as the one on the reel of tape and has a socket with 3 slots [at 120 degrees].

With horizontal decks the tape reel sits on the deck but with vertical ones some decks have fancy ways of locking the reel [something like record clamps]

You could always buy a really cheap reel of low quality tape and throw away the tape ...

Maybe look up revox on the net [but i think they were 10inch but the reel mounting hole would be the same as 7inch or even 3inch].

You could ask the ebay seller if the reel will work with a revox ...

I used to have quite a nice Akai ...

I have thought about this some more ..

I only know about domestic / semi-pro real-to-real

I think there may have been another type of real with a very large hole in the centre [like a vinly 45rmp] but I am not sure ...

Many thanks James. Yes there seems to be only 2 types, a small spindle one (6mm?) and then one with a much bigger hole - I've seen these marked as "pro".

So I think I'll do pretty much as you said, order a blank reel....
