Latest hifi+ (may 2025) has an interview with Giles Martin (son of George Martin of Beatles fame).

When Giles wants to check a pressing he plays it on a wrensilva console (I never heard of them either)

I've recently been watching the series Mad Men and some of the characters have a 1960s version of this.

My parents had a (surely much cheaper!) radiogram that I used to play records when I was really young. I barely remember it now, but I can certainly remember lying on the floor in front of it so I could get right beside the speakers.
