I was thinking of a thread here, few months back, about genres. I had suggested a David Sylvian album in the Jazz thread. Debate ensued.
The forum has categories on Rock, Classical, Jazz, Country, Electronica ....
But what of music that is difficult to categorize ? Should we have an "Other - what are you listening to" ?

I guess David Bowie's Low would go into Rock. But where would Philip Glass' Low Symphony [with Bowie and Eno go ??? Classical ? But it's derived from Rock ...
Is Nora Jones' "The Fall" Rock ? Jazz ? Pop ? [Can we have a pop thread ? - I'm loving Petula again]

...Sylvian's "Manafon" is Jazz or is it something else ?

I know that few of us like genres or generalising things but how else do we recommend this stuff to our good buddies on this here forum ?
So, Should we have an "Other - what are you listening to" ?

Can you guess it's lunchtime ?

mmm. To be honest I was actually thinking of going the other way and lumping it all back in together.... one thread to rule them all!!

Maybe then when we hit 100 pages, or 500 posts or something, we would move on and start a new one....

What would you think?

on one of the old forums we had a single 'What are you listening to' type thread but it became dominated by classical discussions after a while. It discouraged a few from posting there if I remember at the time and a separate non classical listening thread was born out of it shortly before that forum started to fall over.
We could go back to having two seperate listening threads but either way I'm not really bothered to be honest.

Fran, what is your thinking behind going back to a single thread? Is it better for database stabilty? Perhaps all threads older than 9 months could be nuked.

Ah, I was only throwing it out there for the craic to see what people wanted. Its just that theres not much point in having ever more specialised threads with one or 2 posts in each. The issue of classical vs non-classical doesn't really come into it because there's a separate classical forum where that thread would be.

so what do yis want? I'll be leaving it as it is unless people think it would be a good idea....

No database stability issues either. phpBB3 runs a lot bigger forums than ours with no issues... we are unlikely to run into that issue too soon.

I had a very long and detailed post on the futility of secular existence and modern man's necessity to categorise, label and sort. I'd actually written a list about it but somehow hit a wrong button and it's now lost forever. Essentially the way this forum develops is organic, if there's a need for a new thread to cover Inuit throat singing then a poster can create that and see where it goes. If it gets 1 post then ok... if it gets 100 posts that's better but the main thing is when we wake in the middle of the night wondering what was said about Inuit throat singing we'll know where to find it.
