I haven't been on the forum for the last while due to a variety of reasons, so I'm busy catching up on everything I've missed! However, I wonder if any of you can advise n this? I replaced my Samsung TV with an LG earlier this year, without checking the inputs on the TV. I'm using a Meridian DVD player which has RGB, Composite or SVideo outputs. Unfortunately the TV only has HDMI inputs. Does anybody know where I can buy a suitable adapter? I thought that it would be a case of just buying a cable, without realising that the outputs are analogue and the inputs are digital. I've tried all the usual suspects around Dublin with no joy from any of them.

Obviously an RGB to HDMI cable on its own is not going to work otherwise you wouldn't be asking the question? Or would it? They're easy enough to get on the net. Anyway good luck with your search.....

Thanks Dermot! I thought it would be that easy, and apparently it would be if the signal was going from HDMI to RCA, but going from RCA to HDMI is a different kettle of fish.

When it comes to digital there's always a problem lol! Good luck anyway.....

It would probably be best to replace the DVD player with a more modern unit, Blu Ray player etc rather than spending money on trying to sort out some McGuiver work around. I don’t think there is a way to go from a legacy analogue to digital.

In addition modern TV’s give a much higher resolution 3840 x 2160 ( UHD) which is best served by a high resolution player using HDMI etc

Modern DVD / Blu Ray players can be bought new quiet cheaply, starting from about 60 euro upwards etc. Obviously you can spend a lot more if you wanted to.

But it does not make much sense to have a modern high resolution TV using legacy low resolution sources.

Kinda like putting cheap low speed tyres on a sports car. It can be done but defeats the purpose of having a sports car in the first place.

Thanks Adrian, that makes sense, and the only reason that I haven't done it is that I generally use the DVD for music DVD's. The entire audio playback chain is Meridian, and the 596 is a fine audio unit. TBH, the sound quality is more important to me than the video.

I think that I can get something from China for about $20, but I was hoping for something a little closer to home.

Not sure how good they are, but for 20 bucks they might be worth a go.

If you have a lot of legacy equipment like playstations / Xbox’s/ Nintendo’s etc then it can be problematic if the TV gets replaced as it’s all HDMI now.

I believe Cambridge Audio do a good Blu Ray player, around 800 quid. Pioneer also have some good stuff too.

You may be able to buy a modern player which has HDMI out to the TV and analogue audio out into the rest of the Meridian system. By muting the TV, it will just show the picture and audio will be via the Meridian rig.

But ultimately analogue struggles with noise at higher resolutions, so it’s all digital now, not to mention DRM.

So after spending lots of wonga on the TV you now have an excuse to blow some more on the DVD player!!

In for a penny an all that!!
