Advice on Choosing Backup Harddrive

Hello all,

I want to backup a friend's music collection ao an external USB hard-drive. Am I better using an external 3.5" drive (with a USB connection AND a power connection) or an external 2.5" drive (that is powered via USB) or is there no difference? Any difference between brands?

My idea is to make a copy (or multiple copies) and then store it until needed so I want reliability above all. Read/write speed is not too important.

Thanks
James

I have used 3.5" drives to backup for years but in the past 3 to 4 years I have moved to Western Digital Passport USB 2.5" drives.
I have had about 6 over that time and all still working fine despite a lot of travel and knocks.

I tend to leave them plugged in always so they see a lot of running hours and no failures so far.
I have a 2TB drive plugged into a daily use PC for 2 years where i keep my main music collection.

Just be aware about HDD lifespan. Everything above 5y is at high risk, so be sure you replace them every 3-4y
