Help Turntable fetish

Find this difficult to understand. My youngest son Aidan who is besotted with computer programming and all things digital including camera has developed a desire to have a turntable. He has been diligently saving over the last few months and his birthday just past. Checked adverts and at a total loss. I have no idea what values are and what is tosh and what is worth pursuing. I see a lot of the old type of turntables that I remember vaguely from my youth but struggle to understand the high prices given that most of these things must need a lot of tender loving care at this point

Eh, the turntable is the least of your worries, I'd be more worried about the cost of the vinyl itself!
Could he not go and look for a 800 quid graphics card instead like a normal teenager!!!

kinda ironic
in a house that has had the best digital audio equipment in the country playing in it
maybe its the sight of grown men on there hands and knees tinkering
my vinyl erge was quenched easily enough,
after getting a turntable and buying a few lps
then dismantling the turntable for modding i realised the madness had not ended was just a more expensive way of doing it
digital is like getting a library card
vinyl is like trying to buy a library by comparison

Except with digital you only get a scan of the books, not the books themselves. ;)

I have one of those ION USB (and with phono out) decks that he can have for nothing. It's shit but it will get him off the ground.

Love all the comments gave me a laugh. I was thinking along Dermot's lines but after consultation with Aidan it seems he is more thrifty well at least when it comes to turntables then I thought. Ivor's unit it would seem fits the bill at least to see if this is just a passing interest. The most annoying thing is all the albums he really likes i.e. Boston, Doors, Led Zeppelin 4, Pink Floyd I sold for a few euro's each a couple of years ago. The proceeds I think bought a dinky USB cable!
I will take up your kind offer Ivor in exchange for 2 bags of green beans roasted in my new Coffee roaster.
Funny I had a system set up in Aidan's room that consisted of Avi Positrons, Marantz PM66 amp and arcam ipod dock. Sold it all off. He showed no interest at the time.
