How to get a digital signal out of an iPod

A friend of mine uses his iPod as a music server. The headphone output goes into a line input on his stereo amplifier. It works but the sound quality is way below than from his CD player. Is there a cable that plugs into the iPod and outputs the digital signal which can be routed through a DAC and into his hi-fi?
Thanks.

I use an "onkyo ND-s1" for similar task. Item no longer made but pops up on eBay.

Not sure whether a dac would improve the output from an iPod? Has he ever tried a digital audio player from the likes of, say, Fiio? I use one in my system and it's better than any 'cdp' I've ever had. Hope that helps....

Thanks Sligolad for your answer. Apple did some things right, the iPod is a notable exception....

Rocker, your friend wants something like one of these:

Not something I've tried, but this type of implementation is supposed to make a big improvement in sound quality.
