Sunday 20th September at 6.30pm on Lyric - Dmitri Shostakovich String Quartet No.8
Great Moments in Classical Music examines the story behind the Eighth String Quartet by the great Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich. In the summer of 1960 he paid a visit to bomb-ravaged Dresden, and wrote the work in an incredible three days, dedicating it to the victims of fascism and war. But there’s rarely one meaning in any Shostakovitch work, and running through the fabric of this one is a musical motif that spelt his name out in musical notes. In a world in which it was dangerous to articulate things too clearly, Shostakovitch was giving a coded clue: this quartet is also about him.

Thanks for posting that one Seán. Unfortunately I will not get to listen to it. Does lyric have some sort of a playback facility like BBC Radio 3?
