Apologies if this has been covered in previous thread although a quick search suggested possibly not. Regarding computer audio, I've seen quite a bit of discussion about DAC's - but was wondering what people's thoughts are regarding the various options for storage and control of playback?
What do people perceive to be main advantages and pitfalls of proprietary systems such as Meridian Core 200, Olive, SOtM, Sonore, etc when compared to simply using generic PC or perhaps some of the CAPS designs featured on Computer Audiophile site?
I'm guessing price is certainly a factor, but also seems to be differences in ease of use of remote interface, format that files are stored, physical connectivity options (I guess always better to use dedicated external DAC). Thoughts on this for the benefit of computer audio newbie very welcome!

I use a mac mini, running Pure Music and Audiovarna. In addition to iTunes it is the source for Spotify, internet radio etc. I use an IPad and/or iPhone as the remote. It is also connected via HDMI to my TV for youtube etc. The mini is USB connected to my DAC. All my CDs and a chunk of vinyl is ripped to it, along with some hirez downloads.

Personally I prefer this option to a commerical music server, I can easily change players, add more capacity and the remote apps work great. Since it takes very little power it is on all the time.
