Hi all,
I am a very enjoyable time with the ATM2s previously owned by Dave. I will report on it shortly. However I am having a very fustrating time trying to burn some hi res downloads, McCartney 1 in 24/96 hi res unlimited format. I own a Classe CDP 300 which plays DVD-A and I am trying to burn these downloads to disc for playback as DVD-A or V and my computer is a Mac with OS X 10.6.8.
I have downloaded Burn which is Mac compatible and tried burning the tracks onto a DVD-RW which is supported by the Classe CDP 300 but maybe not when they are music files only. I have to say that any DVD -A I have sounds great. I have to say that I am pretty useless at this download business!! Any advice would be welcome. I wonder also is nay DRM issues which may have kicked in?
People here seem to be very savvy with Hi res so I am optimistic my issues will be solved!!!!!

Not sure Peter - I suspect though that you need special software to burn a DVD-A - and such software might well be tied up in DRM issues.
Google might be your friend in finding an answer!!

Hi Fran
thanks for the suggestion. It is difficult to source Mac compatible software on the net. Soundforge do sell for 100 dollars a program which may work. I will probably download a trial first and see if it works.
Burn is meant to work but it doesn't appear to burn to the DVD- RW disc. I must be doing something wrong but can't see what it is. I have to say I find most things computer related to be a glorious pain.
Hi res seems to be more troublesome to make it worth the effort.

Does anybody know anything about XLD? How do you use it?

Sorry!
I just always thought dvd-a was a "closed" format kinda like sacd? That's why I thought you might not be able to home burn one.
You're blazing a trail for us here!

Hi Peter,
No expert on DVD A or Macs but would you not look at playback from the MAC of the Hi Res files through one of the various players out there. Like Fran said I expect it could be a closed format like SACD though I am going to dive in to trying to rip SACD which requires a specific model of a PS3 with major software mod. It is never easy trying to connvert these formats but if it is any help I found a page which might help
http://www.ciamara.com/contact/techsupp ... d/xld.html
If you were windows based I expect there may be more options but either way I expect a steep learning curve.
Might be better getting a SPDIF converter off John Kenny to try with you MAC|.
Pearse.

Fran,
Thanks for help. I really wish I was more competent and in touch with the various programs and file formats. I am lazy when it comes to computer audio. When I was younger I knew my way round computers. I have an idea but quite often need somebody to fire questions at. I don't think I am really a trail blazer, but sometimes I can be persistent.
I think it might help to set out in more detail my set up and arrangements.
My audio is in our main living and dining room. It is a long room with audio/relaxing area with open fireplace. The hifi is on a hifi racks stack of shelves. My turntable is on a quadasphere wall shelf above the kit which now consists of a Classe CDP 300 which I use to play CDs and DVD-As. It unfortunately does not support SACD. It will also play DVDs and I hope to put a TV on the fireplace wall near to it. My turntable is a Roksan Xerses 20, Tabriz Zi tonearm and Van Den Hul MC one super special cartridge.
The amplifier is as everyone knows here the Airtight ATM 2 with the CDP 300 going directly into it, and the phono stage is the Van Den Hul the ultimate phonostage.
My speakers are Quad 2805s with a set of Townsend supertweeters. At present cables are mainly Nordost Heimdell, Baldur and I'm using a Q6 block for plugs. Power cables are a mix of Lavardin, Nordost and Wireworld.
Given my Amplifier the addition of extra source components is not a runner unless I invest in a pre-amplifier. Not a runner at the moment due to recent expenditure!!!! My better half is very tolerant and very definitively low maintenance so I can't push my luck too far.
I have an IMac G5 Intel dual core in a another room for general family use. My kids have laptops which are windows based but my ability to access them it limited and probably not a good idea!!!
I hope the above gives you an idea why I want to burn the downloads to discs. Also I have had too much bad experience with computers being compromised through viruses, hard disc failures etc. to have any faith in them. I know everybody says back up everything but I have seen backups fail, and the difficulties associated with recovery of files both at work and at home. I find computer equipment to be unreliable unlike audio in general which has remarkable build quality. For example a Linn Sondek I traded in to Cloney for the Xerses had given service for 20 plus years. Likewise my Meridian CD 206 delta sigma player from 1989 which I still have and it still works. The Laser is now only failing and needs to be replaced and I am not sure I can get a replacement.
I would like to play the hi res files on the CDP 300 given I have purchased them but the problems and difficulties with burning them onto a DVD disc are intolerable.

Sligolad,
Thanks for the link and it is the most user friendly and helpful explaination of XLD. However i have downloaded the tracks from the internet, and they are 24/96 files. I think I need to run these files which are WAV files through XLD and output them again as WAV files and then burn them to DVD. It seems odd but apparently this process strips out material which is stopping me burning them to disc, possibly drm information. Any suggestions as how to set XLD to perform this task would be much appreciated as the link only deals from what I can see with ripping a CD.
I will get there I promise!!! Good luck with ripping your SACD disc.

Hi Peter,
I too am following the thread to see if there is an answer to your conundrum.
Just one point, you mentioned that your Mac is a Intel G5 unit.
Are you sure this is the case? The G5 is not a intel chip, it is a CPU RISC based and a member of the IBM POWER PC processor family.
I wonder is the problem due to the fact that the computer architecture is RISC based and not Intel based. Perhaps there is a software incompatibility issue?
Just my tuppance worth!!
Adrian.
