The end of an era! This makes me sadder than I can say.
He died today at Starnberg in the Bavarian Mountains, not long before his 87th birthday.

What sad news.
I only heard him live once, in the 1986 Salzburg Festival.
Next to Caruso and Maria Callas, certainly the most influential singer of the XX Century.

This is very sad news, may he Rest In Peace. I must listen to his singing Mahler and Schubert in celebration of his wonderful legacy.

how fitting that I was only listening to him, in the car on the way home... :-(
also, we have just been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first performance of Britten's War Requiem, which he sang in, at Coventry Cathedral...
very sad news indeed.
